Read the text and answer the questions (True / False). Oliver discovered his love of drawing almost by accident. One rainy afternoon, when he could not go outside to play, his aunt gave him an old sketchbook and a box of pencils. He started copying a picture of a bird from a magazine, and to his surprise the result was quite good. From that day, Oliver drew something almost every evening. He did not show his pictures to anyone at first, because he was afraid that people would laugh at them. His art teacher, Miss Carter, noticed his talent during a lesson and encouraged him to keep practising. She also lent him a book about famous painters. This year Oliver entered one of his drawings in the school art competition. He did not win first prize, but the judges gave him a special mention for his clever use of colour. Now he dreams of becoming an illustrator one day, and he carries his sketchbook with him almost everywhere he goes.

Read the text and answer the questions (True / False). Last spring Maria visited London for the first time with her older brother. The thing that surprised her most was not the famous buildings, but the underground railway, which everyone in the city calls the Tube. It is one of the oldest underground systems in the world, and millions of people use it every single day. At first Maria found the map confusing, because there were so many coloured lines crossing the city. Her brother explained that each line had a different name and colour, so once she understood that, it became much easier. They bought a special travel card that allowed them to use the trains and buses all week without paying each time. Maria's favourite station was an old one with beautiful tiles on the walls. She noticed that the trains came every few minutes, so they never had to wait long. By the end of the trip, she felt confident enough to find her way around the city completely on her own.

Read the text and answer the questions (True / False). For her thirteenth birthday, Sophie finally got her first smartphone. Her parents had told her for a long time that she was too young, but they decided she was now old enough to use one responsibly. Before they gave it to her, they agreed on some simple rules: no phone during meals and no screens after nine o'clock in the evening. At first Sophie spent hours taking photos and chatting with her friends in a group message. Her favourite app was one that let her edit pictures and add funny stickers. However, she soon noticed that she was reading fewer books than before, which made her a little worried. To fix the problem, Sophie set herself a goal to read for thirty minutes every day before going to sleep, instead of using her phone. After a few weeks the habit became easy, and she felt much calmer in the evenings. She told her parents that having rules about the phone had actually helped her.

Read the text and answer the questions (True / False). When Lucas joined his new school, he was surprised to learn that the football team trained four times a week. He had always loved the sport, but he had never practised so often before. The coach, Mr Reed, was strict about being on time, and any player who arrived late had to run extra laps around the pitch. At first Lucas found the training very hard, and after the first session he could barely walk home. However, he did not give up, and slowly he became one of the strongest players in the team. He was especially good at defending, although he secretly wished he could score more goals. In May the team reached the final of the regional cup. They lost the match by a single goal, but Mr Reed told them he was proud of how far they had come. Lucas was disappointed, yet he already could not wait for the next season to begin.

Read the text and answer the questions (True / False). Last July the Wilson family went on their first camping trip in the mountains. None of them had ever slept in a tent before, so they were both excited and a little nervous. They packed sleeping bags, warm clothes and plenty of food, because there were no shops near the campsite. Putting up the tent turned out to be much harder than they had expected. It took almost an hour and a lot of laughing before it finally stood up straight. That evening they cooked sausages over a small fire and watched the stars, which were brighter than any they had seen in the city. During the night it rained heavily, but luckily the tent kept them dry. In the morning the air smelled fresh and clean, and they went for a long walk beside a cold mountain stream. Although the trip was not always comfortable, the whole family agreed it had been a real adventure and decided to go camping again the following summer.

Английский 4 класс (Примаков) — Чтение, вариант 9: Tom's Saturday

My name is Tom and I am nine years old. I love Saturdays because there is no school. But on Saturday morning I never sleep late. My family always cleans the house together, and everyone has a job to do. My job is to feed our dog, Rex, and then take him for a walk in the park. I don't like washing the dishes, so my sister Kate does that. My mum cooks lunch while my dad fixes things in the garage. After lunch we go shopping. We don't go to the big shopping centre. We walk to the small shop near our house because it is quicker. I usually buy apples and bread, but today my mum let me buy a chocolate bar too. In the evening I am tired, but I am happy. Saturday is a busy day, but it is my favourite day of the week.

I don't have breakfast in bed because my mum says that is a bad habit. After breakfast I do some chores. First, I make my bed and tidy my room. Then I help my dad in the garden. We don't have a dog, but we have two cats, so I give them food and clean water. My sister Lucy hates cleaning, so I usually wash the dishes with her. I don't like it very much, but my mum gives us some pocket money for it. In the afternoon we go shopping. We buy bread, fruit and milk, but we never buy sweets on Saturdays. After shopping I am tired, so I have a short rest and read my favourite book about animals.

Read the text and choose True, False or Not stated. Every summer Tom stays with his grandmother in a small village near the sea. She lives in an old wooden house with a big kitchen, and she is famous among the neighbours for her cooking. Last year Tom decided that he wanted to learn how to make the traditional dishes that his family had eaten for many years. His grandmother was happy to teach him, because she said that these old recipes should not be forgotten. They started with a simple vegetable soup. Grandmother showed Tom how to cut the carrots and the potatoes, and she told him that the secret was to cook everything slowly. At first Tom was not very good with the knife, and once he almost dropped the whole pot. However, he did not give up, and after a few days his soup tasted almost as good as hers. After that they baked bread and made a sweet pie with apples from the garden. What Tom liked most was not only the food but also the stories. While they were cooking, his grandmother talked about her childhood and about the dishes her own mother used to prepare. Tom wrote some of the recipes in a little notebook so that he could cook them at home in the city. When the holidays ended, he promised to come back the next summer. He understood that cooking with his grandmother had brought them much closer, and he felt proud to keep the family traditions alive.

Read the text and choose True, False or Not stated. Last Sunday a group of students from Maya's class spent the whole day as volunteers at an animal shelter outside the city. They arrived at nine o'clock in the morning, and a worker called Mr Foster showed them around the building. He explained that the shelter looked after more than sixty animals, mostly dogs and cats, while they waited for new families. Although the work sounded simple, the students soon understood that it was quite hard. In the morning Maya and two other girls cleaned the cages and put fresh water in every bowl. After that they helped to prepare food for the smaller animals. Maya had never realised how much a shelter needed, because the staff there were only four people and they could not do everything alone. In the afternoon the children took the dogs for short walks in a field behind the building. Maya was a little afraid of one big grey dog at first, however by the end of the day he followed her everywhere. Before the students went home, Mr Foster thanked them and said that volunteers were always welcome at the weekend. He also told them that two of the dogs they had walked would soon go to new homes. Maya felt tired but very happy. On the bus back to the city she decided that she would return to the shelter during the next school holidays, and she promised herself to tell her friends how much the animals needed help.

One afternoon he saw a poster about the school drama club, and although he was shy, he decided to go to the first meeting. The teacher, Mrs Harper, welcomed everybody and explained that this year the club would perform a play about a group of explorers who get lost in a jungle. Daniel was sure he would only paint the scenery, but to his surprise Mrs Harper gave him the part of the brave captain. The rehearsals were not easy. Daniel had to learn many lines, and at first he often forgot them in front of the others. However, the other students were friendly and helped him practise during the breaks. After a few weeks he knew the whole part by heart, and he even started to enjoy speaking on the stage. He made friends with a girl called Mia, who was in charge of the music and the lights. The play was performed in the school hall on a Friday evening, and almost two hundred people came to watch it. Daniel was nervous before it began, but once the lights went on he forgot his fear completely. When the show finished, the audience clapped for a long time. Daniel's parents told him that they were very proud of him. He realised that joining the drama club had not only given him confidence but also turned the new school into a place where he finally felt at home.

Read the text and choose True, False or Not stated. For a long time Sofia had wanted a dog, but her parents always said that the flat was too small. Everything changed last autumn, when the family moved to a house with a little garden. One Saturday morning they drove to an animal shelter on the edge of the town to choose a pet. Sofia had imagined a tiny puppy, however the dog that ran straight to her was already three years old. His name was Rex, and a volunteer explained that his previous owners had left him because they were moving abroad. Rex was thin and rather shy, and at first he hid under the kitchen table whenever someone came near. The vet said he was healthy, although he needed better food and a lot of patience. Sofia decided to take care of him herself. Every morning before school she fed him and brushed his brown coat, and every evening she took him for a walk in the park near their house. After two months Rex was a completely different dog. He no longer hid from visitors, and he learned to sit and to bring a ball. Sofia's father, who had not really wanted a pet, now took Rex running at the weekend. The whole family agreed that adopting an older dog from the shelter had been one of their best decisions, because Rex had given them far more happiness than they had expected.

Read the text and choose True, False or Not stated. Last Sunday my uncle took me and my cousin to a science museum in the centre of the city. We had wanted to visit it for a long time, but the museum is usually very crowded, so we left home early to avoid the queues. When we arrived, there were already dozens of people waiting outside, although the doors had not opened yet. The museum had three huge floors. On the ground floor we learned about space, and I sat inside a model of a real spaceship, which was much smaller than I had expected. After that we went upstairs to the floor about the human body, where a friendly guide explained how the heart works using a giant model. My cousin asked so many questions that the guide laughed and said he should become a scientist one day. The best part was the experiment room. We touched a strange ball that made our hair stand up, and we built a small bridge from wooden blocks to see how much weight it could hold. Although we were having a wonderful time, the hours passed quickly and soon the museum was closing. Before we left, my uncle bought us each a small souvenir from the shop near the exit. On the way home I felt tired but excited, and I told my parents that I wanted to come back again very soon to see the parts we had missed.

Read the text and choose True, False or Not stated. Every spring our school holds a science fair, and this year I decided to take part for the first time. Our teacher told us that we could work in pairs, so I chose to work with my classmate Nina, because she is good at drawing and I am better at writing. We wanted to find out which kind of plant grows fastest, although neither of us knew much about gardening at the start. We planted beans, peas and sunflower seeds in three identical pots and put them on the same windowsill. Every morning before lessons we measured the little plants with a ruler and wrote the numbers in a notebook. At first nothing happened, however after about a week tiny green shoots finally appeared. The beans grew the quickest, which surprised us both. Preparing the final poster was hard work. Nina drew colourful pictures of each plant while I explained our experiment in clear sentences. On the day of the fair we were extremely nervous, because many parents and teachers walked around asking difficult questions. One judge asked us why the peas grew more slowly, and luckily we had an answer ready. In the end our project did not win first prize, but the judges said our notes were the most careful in the whole class. After that day Nina and I agreed that we would definitely enter the fair together again next year.

Read the text and choose True, False or Not stated. Two years ago my family moved from a quiet village to a large city, because my mother had found a new job at a hospital there. I did not want to leave, since all my friends lived in the village and I knew every street near our old house. However, my parents promised that the city would be exciting, and in the end they were right. Our new flat was on the seventh floor of a tall building, and from my window I could see the river and hundreds of bright lights at night. At first the noise of the traffic kept me awake, but after a few weeks I got used to it. The most difficult thing was starting a new school in the middle of the year. On my first morning I felt so nervous that I could hardly eat breakfast. Luckily, a boy called Daniel sat next to me and showed me where everything was. Although the building was huge and I got lost twice, the teachers were patient and the lessons were more interesting than at my old school. Within a month I had joined the basketball team and made several good friends. I still write letters to my friends in the village, and we meet during the holidays, but now the busy city really feels like home, and I cannot imagine living anywhere else.

Read the text and choose True, False or Not stated. Leo had always loved music, but until last year he had never tried to play an instrument himself. For his eleventh birthday his grandmother gave him an old acoustic guitar that had belonged to his uncle. The guitar was a little scratched and one string was missing, however Leo thought it was the best present he had ever received. He found some free lessons on the internet and began practising every evening after he finished his homework. At first his fingers hurt and the sounds were terrible, so his sister often closed her door and asked him to stop. Leo did not give up, though. He practised the same three chords again and again until, after about a month, he could play a simple song from beginning to end. He was extremely proud of himself. When the new term started, his music teacher invited everyone to join the school music club, which met twice a week in the hall. Leo was nervous because the other members had been playing for years, but he decided to go anyway. To his surprise, the older students were friendly and helped him learn new songs. Although he still made plenty of mistakes, he enjoyed playing together far more than playing alone in his room. By the end of the autumn the club was preparing a small concert for parents, and Leo was practising harder than ever, dreaming of one day writing his own music.

Read the text and choose True, False or Not stated. Last winter Anna and her family travelled across the country by train to visit her uncle, who lived in a city far in the east. The journey lasted almost three days, and Anna had never been on such a long trip before. Their train left the station early in the morning, and at first Anna was worried that she would feel bored. However, the long hours passed much faster than she had expected. The family had a small compartment with four beds, a little table and a wide window. Anna spent a lot of time looking outside, because the view changed all the time. In the first hours she saw busy towns and grey factories, but later there were only endless forests covered with snow, frozen rivers and tiny villages with smoking chimneys. In the evening her father bought hot tea from a friendly conductor, and the whole family played card games until it was time to sleep. The best moment came on the second day, when the train stopped for half an hour at a station high in the mountains. Anna got out and felt the cold, fresh air, and she took several photos of the snowy peaks. Although the trip was tiring, she enjoyed every minute of it. When they finally arrived, her uncle was waiting for them on the platform with a big smile. Anna told her parents that she wanted to travel by train again, because she had seen more of her country in three days than in all the years before.

Read the text and choose True, False or Not stated. Last August my parents decided to take me and my brother on a camping trip in the mountains, because we had spent the whole summer in the city and everyone wanted some fresh air. We packed our old green tent, two sleeping bags, a small gas stove and enough food for four days, and then we drove north for almost six hours. When we finally arrived, the air was much colder than at home, although the sun was still shining brightly above the grey peaks. Putting up the tent was not easy. My father read the instructions twice, however we still made several mistakes and had to start again. After that we cooked some soup and sat around a small fire, listening to the wind in the tall pine trees. I had never slept outside before, so at first every sound made me nervous, but soon I was too tired to worry. The next morning we climbed a steep path to a clear blue lake. The water was freezing, yet my brother jumped straight in and shouted that it felt wonderful. We took dozens of photographs and ate our sandwiches on a flat rock. Although it rained heavily on the third day and our boots got wet, nobody complained. By the time we drove home, tired and a little dirty, we had already started planning our next adventure in the wild.

There are many animals on the farm. I saw cows, horses and chickens. Every morning I gave bread to the chickens. My favourite animal is the horse. Her name is Bella. She is white and very tall. My uncle let me sit on Bella. In the afternoon we picked apples and berries. The berries were red and sweet. We made jam in the big kitchen. In the evening we sat near the fire and sang songs. Read the text and answer the questions (True / False). For his twelfth birthday, Daniel asked his parents for a dog. At first they were not sure, because looking after a pet is a lot of work, but in the end they agreed. Instead of buying a puppy from a shop, the family decided to visit the local animal shelter and give a home to a dog that nobody wanted. At the shelter Daniel met a brown dog with one white ear called Biscuit. The dog was three years old and very friendly, although the staff said he was a little shy with strangers. Daniel chose him at once, and the next day they took Biscuit home. Now Daniel walks Biscuit in the park every morning before school and feeds him twice a day. The dog has become much more confident and even learned a few tricks. Daniel's parents are happy too, because having Biscuit has taught their son to be more responsible.

Read the text and answer the questions (True / False). Last month our class went on a school trip to the Science Museum in the city centre. We travelled there by train, which took about an hour, and our teacher, Mrs Allen, reminded us to bring a notebook and a packed lunch. Most of us were excited because we had never visited the museum before. When we arrived, a guide showed us around the different rooms. My favourite part was the space section, where we could see a real piece of rock from the Moon and try a machine that showed how heavy we would be on other planets. In another room we watched a short film about robots, but it was only fifteen minutes long, so nobody got bored. After lunch we visited the gift shop, where I bought a small poster of the solar system for my bedroom. We arrived back at school late in the afternoon, tired but happy. Everyone agreed it had been a brilliant day, and we hoped to go again next year.

Read the text and answer the questions (True / False). Every Saturday morning a small farmers' market takes place in the main square of Tom's town. Local farmers and bakers come from the surrounding villages to sell fresh fruit, vegetables, bread and homemade cheese. The market opens at eight o'clock and closes at one in the afternoon, so people have to arrive early if they want the best products. Tom often goes there with his grandmother, who has shopped at the market for more than twenty years. She says the food is much fresher than in the supermarket and usually cheaper too. Her favourite stall belongs to an old man called George, who sells honey from his own bees. Last week the market was busier than usual because a band was playing live music in one corner. Tom bought a basket of strawberries and shared them with his friends. He believes the market is one of the nicest places in town, and he tries never to miss a Saturday.

Read the text and answer the questions (True / False). When Emma started at her new school in September, she felt quite lonely because she did not know anyone. Then her English teacher told her about the school book club, which met every Thursday after lessons in the library. Emma loved reading, so she decided to give it a try, although she was a little nervous at first. The club had about fifteen members, and each month they chose a different book to read and discuss together. They usually picked adventure stories, but sometimes they read poetry or short plays. The teacher who ran the club, Mr Davies, always brought biscuits and made hot chocolate for everyone. By the end of the term, Emma had made several good friends and even helped to organise a small reading festival for younger pupils. She said that joining the club was the best decision she had made since moving to the new town, and she could not wait for the next meeting.

Read the text and answer the questions (True / False). Last summer the Carter family decided to spend their holiday in Scotland instead of going abroad. They rented a small cottage near a lake and spent most of their days hiking in the hills. Although the weather was often cloudy, they had a wonderful time and took hundreds of photographs. In the evenings they cooked dinner together and played board games, because there was no television in the cottage. One of the best parts of the trip was the new sports centre in the nearest town, which had opened the month before. It had a swimming pool, two tennis courts and a large gym. Visitors could use the pool for free on Saturday mornings, but they had to book a place online in advance. Mr Carter said it was the most relaxing holiday the family had ever had, and they promised to come back next year.

Read the text about Sophie and write True or False. Last Saturday Sophie went shopping with her mum. They didn't go to the big shopping centre in the city. Instead, they walked to the small market near their house, because the fruit there is always fresh and cheaper. Sophie's mum had a long list. First, they bought some apples, bananas and a lot of carrots for soup. Then they looked for new shoes for Sophie, but the shoe shop was closed, so they decided to come back another day. Sophie wanted a chocolate cake, but her mum said no. "You can choose some strawberries instead," she said. Sophie wasn't happy at first, but the strawberries were delicious, so soon she changed her mind. They carried four heavy bags home. Sophie's little brother Tom didn't come with them, because he was at his football lesson. When they got home, everyone was hungry, and Sophie helped her mum make a big salad for lunch.

Прочитайте текст и ответьте на вопросы по нему (вопросы и ответы — на английском). Over the past few years, remote work has shifted from being a rare privilege to a standard arrangement for millions of employees. While the technology that makes it possible existed long before, it was a global crisis that finally forced companies to adopt it on a massive scale. Now that the dust has settled, both workers and employers are weighing up the genuine costs and benefits. The advantages are obvious to most employees. Without a daily commute, people reclaim hours of their time and save a considerable amount of money. Many report higher productivity, arguing that the quiet of a home office allows for deeper concentration than a busy workplace ever could. Flexibility, too, makes it easier to balance professional duties with family life. However, the picture is not entirely positive. Some workers struggle with isolation, missing the casual conversations that build relationships and spark ideas. Others find it almost impossible to switch off, as the boundary between work and home dissolves. For employers, maintaining a shared company culture across scattered teams remains a serious challenge. Most experts now predict that the future is neither fully remote nor a return to the old office, but rather a hybrid model. The companies that thrive, they suggest, will be those flexible enough to let employees choose the arrangement that suits them best — while still finding ways to bring people together when it truly matters.

Прочитайте текст и ответьте на вопросы по нему (вопросы и ответы — на английском). When most people think of bees, they picture an annoying insect that might sting them at a summer picnic. Yet few realise that these tiny creatures are among the most important animals on the planet. Without them, the food on our plates would look dramatically different. Bees are responsible for pollinating a huge proportion of the crops we rely on. As they move from flower to flower collecting nectar, they transfer pollen, allowing plants to produce fruit and seeds. It is estimated that roughly a third of everything we eat depends, directly or indirectly, on pollination by bees and other insects. Apples, almonds, coffee and countless other foods would become scarce and expensive without them. Alarmingly, bee populations have been declining for decades. Scientists point to a combination of factors: the loss of wild habitats, the widespread use of certain pesticides, disease, and the effects of a changing climate. No single cause is to blame, which makes the problem particularly difficult to solve. The good news is that individuals can make a difference. Planting wildflowers, avoiding harmful chemicals in gardens, and supporting local beekeepers all help. Ultimately, though, protecting bees will require coordinated action from governments and farmers. What is clear is that the fate of these small insects is tied far more closely to our own than most of us imagine.

Прочитайте текст и ответьте на вопросы по нему (вопросы и ответы — на английском). Three years ago I moved from a small village to a huge city, and my life completely changed. At first I found it exciting. There was always something to do: cinemas, restaurants, concerts and shops that never seemed to close. I made new friends quickly because there were so many people around. However, city life is not perfect. The biggest problem for me is the cost. Renting even a small flat is incredibly expensive, and I spend almost half of my salary on it. The streets are often crowded and noisy, and the air is not as clean as in the countryside. Sometimes I really miss the peace and quiet of my old village. Despite these problems, I have decided to stay. My job is here, and I have learned to enjoy the energy of the city. I think the most important thing is to find a balance: I work hard during the week, but at weekends I often escape to the countryside to relax. For me, that is the perfect solution.

Английский B1 · Чтение: история шоколада

Прочитайте текст и ответьте на вопросы по нему (вопросы и ответы — на английском). Chocolate is one of the most popular foods in the world, but it has not always been a sweet treat. The story of chocolate began over 3,000 years ago in Central America, where the Maya and the Aztecs used cocoa beans to make a bitter drink. They believed the drink gave them energy and even used the beans as money. When Spanish explorers brought cocoa back to Europe in the 16th century, people added sugar to make it sweeter, and it quickly became fashionable among the rich. For a long time chocolate was so expensive that only wealthy people could afford it. Everything changed in the 19th century. New machines made it possible to produce chocolate cheaply and in large amounts. In 1847 a British company created the first solid chocolate bar, and soon chocolate became a treat that almost everyone could enjoy. Today the world eats more than 7 million tonnes of chocolate every year.
