Last spring Maria visited London for the first time with her older brother. The thing that surprised her most was not the famous buildings, but the underground railway, which everyone in the city calls the Tube. It is one of the oldest underground systems in the world, and millions of people use it every single day.
At first Maria found the map confusing, because there were so many coloured lines crossing the city. Her brother explained that each line had a different name and colour, so once she understood that, it became much easier. They bought a special travel card that allowed them to use the trains and buses all week without paying each time.
Maria's favourite station was an old one with beautiful tiles on the walls. She noticed that the trains came every few minutes, so they never had to wait long. By the end of the trip, she felt confident enough to find her way around the city completely on her own.
