Every summer Tom stays with his grandmother in a small village near the sea. She lives in an old wooden house with a big kitchen, and she is famous among the neighbours for her cooking. Last year Tom decided that he wanted to learn how to make the traditional dishes that his family had eaten for many years. His grandmother was happy to teach him, because she said that these old recipes should not be forgotten.
They started with a simple vegetable soup. Grandmother showed Tom how to cut the carrots and the potatoes, and she told him that the secret was to cook everything slowly. At first Tom was not very good with the knife, and once he almost dropped the whole pot. However, he did not give up, and after a few days his soup tasted almost as good as hers. After that they baked bread and made a sweet pie with apples from the garden.
What Tom liked most was not only the food but also the stories. While they were cooking, his grandmother talked about her childhood and about the dishes her own mother used to prepare. Tom wrote some of the recipes in a little notebook so that he could cook them at home in the city. When the holidays ended, he promised to come back the next summer. He understood that cooking with his grandmother had brought them much closer, and he felt proud to keep the family traditions alive.
