Last Sunday a group of students from Maya's class spent the whole day as volunteers at an animal shelter outside the city. They arrived at nine o'clock in the morning, and a worker called Mr Foster showed them around the building. He explained that the shelter looked after more than sixty animals, mostly dogs and cats, while they waited for new families. Although the work sounded simple, the students soon understood that it was quite hard.
In the morning Maya and two other girls cleaned the cages and put fresh water in every bowl. After that they helped to prepare food for the smaller animals. Maya had never realised how much a shelter needed, because the staff there were only four people and they could not do everything alone. In the afternoon the children took the dogs for short walks in a field behind the building. Maya was a little afraid of one big grey dog at first, however by the end of the day he followed her everywhere.
Before the students went home, Mr Foster thanked them and said that volunteers were always welcome at the weekend. He also told them that two of the dogs they had walked would soon go to new homes. Maya felt tired but very happy. On the bus back to the city she decided that she would return to the shelter during the next school holidays, and she promised herself to tell her friends how much the animals needed help.
