When Daniel started at his new school, he felt lonely because he did not know anyone in his class. One afternoon he saw a poster about the school drama club, and although he was shy, he decided to go to the first meeting. The teacher, Mrs Harper, welcomed everybody and explained that this year the club would perform a play about a group of explorers who get lost in a jungle. Daniel was sure he would only paint the scenery, but to his surprise Mrs Harper gave him the part of the brave captain.
The rehearsals were not easy. Daniel had to learn many lines, and at first he often forgot them in front of the others. However, the other students were friendly and helped him practise during the breaks. After a few weeks he knew the whole part by heart, and he even started to enjoy speaking on the stage. He made friends with a girl called Mia, who was in charge of the music and the lights.
The play was performed in the school hall on a Friday evening, and almost two hundred people came to watch it. Daniel was nervous before it began, but once the lights went on he forgot his fear completely. When the show finished, the audience clapped for a long time. Daniel's parents told him that they were very proud of him. He realised that joining the drama club had not only given him confidence but also turned the new school into a place where he finally felt at home.
