For a long time Sofia had wanted a dog, but her parents always said that the flat was too small. Everything changed last autumn, when the family moved to a house with a little garden. One Saturday morning they drove to an animal shelter on the edge of the town to choose a pet. Sofia had imagined a tiny puppy, however the dog that ran straight to her was already three years old. His name was Rex, and a volunteer explained that his previous owners had left him because they were moving abroad.
Rex was thin and rather shy, and at first he hid under the kitchen table whenever someone came near. The vet said he was healthy, although he needed better food and a lot of patience. Sofia decided to take care of him herself. Every morning before school she fed him and brushed his brown coat, and every evening she took him for a walk in the park near their house.
After two months Rex was a completely different dog. He no longer hid from visitors, and he learned to sit and to bring a ball. Sofia's father, who had not really wanted a pet, now took Rex running at the weekend. The whole family agreed that adopting an older dog from the shelter had been one of their best decisions, because Rex had given them far more happiness than they had expected.
