Every spring our school holds a science fair, and this year I decided to take part for the first time. Our teacher told us that we could work in pairs, so I chose to work with my classmate Nina, because she is good at drawing and I am better at writing. We wanted to find out which kind of plant grows fastest, although neither of us knew much about gardening at the start.
We planted beans, peas and sunflower seeds in three identical pots and put them on the same windowsill. Every morning before lessons we measured the little plants with a ruler and wrote the numbers in a notebook. At first nothing happened, however after about a week tiny green shoots finally appeared. The beans grew the quickest, which surprised us both.
Preparing the final poster was hard work. Nina drew colourful pictures of each plant while I explained our experiment in clear sentences. On the day of the fair we were extremely nervous, because many parents and teachers walked around asking difficult questions. One judge asked us why the peas grew more slowly, and luckily we had an answer ready. In the end our project did not win first prize, but the judges said our notes were the most careful in the whole class. After that day Nina and I agreed that we would definitely enter the fair together again next year.
