Leo had always loved music, but until last year he had never tried to play an instrument himself. For his eleventh birthday his grandmother gave him an old acoustic guitar that had belonged to his uncle. The guitar was a little scratched and one string was missing, however Leo thought it was the best present he had ever received. He found some free lessons on the internet and began practising every evening after he finished his homework.
At first his fingers hurt and the sounds were terrible, so his sister often closed her door and asked him to stop. Leo did not give up, though. He practised the same three chords again and again until, after about a month, he could play a simple song from beginning to end. He was extremely proud of himself.
When the new term started, his music teacher invited everyone to join the school music club, which met twice a week in the hall. Leo was nervous because the other members had been playing for years, but he decided to go anyway. To his surprise, the older students were friendly and helped him learn new songs. Although he still made plenty of mistakes, he enjoyed playing together far more than playing alone in his room. By the end of the autumn the club was preparing a small concert for parents, and Leo was practising harder than ever, dreaming of one day writing his own music.
