Last August my parents decided to take me and my brother on a camping trip in the mountains, because we had spent the whole summer in the city and everyone wanted some fresh air. We packed our old green tent, two sleeping bags, a small gas stove and enough food for four days, and then we drove north for almost six hours. When we finally arrived, the air was much colder than at home, although the sun was still shining brightly above the grey peaks.
Putting up the tent was not easy. My father read the instructions twice, however we still made several mistakes and had to start again. After that we cooked some soup and sat around a small fire, listening to the wind in the tall pine trees. I had never slept outside before, so at first every sound made me nervous, but soon I was too tired to worry.
The next morning we climbed a steep path to a clear blue lake. The water was freezing, yet my brother jumped straight in and shouted that it felt wonderful. We took dozens of photographs and ate our sandwiches on a flat rock. Although it rained heavily on the third day and our boots got wet, nobody complained. By the time we drove home, tired and a little dirty, we had already started planning our next adventure in the wild.
