Chocolate is one of the most popular foods in the world, but it has not always been a sweet treat. The story of chocolate began over 3,000 years ago in Central America, where the Maya and the Aztecs used cocoa beans to make a bitter drink. They believed the drink gave them energy and even used the beans as money.
When Spanish explorers brought cocoa back to Europe in the 16th century, people added sugar to make it sweeter, and it quickly became fashionable among the rich. For a long time chocolate was so expensive that only wealthy people could afford it.
Everything changed in the 19th century. New machines made it possible to produce chocolate cheaply and in large amounts. In 1847 a British company created the first solid chocolate bar, and soon chocolate became a treat that almost everyone could enjoy. Today the world eats more than 7 million tonnes of chocolate every year.
